The Lightbox

The Lightbox

The final project of Semester 1 was the Light Box. With the goal of holding light within an open 3D form, Spencer Reed, my partner on the project, suggested that we use the triangular transformation from my wall system to create the box. This changed to instead using the fins and creating an expansion from one side of the box to another. The first prototype was an experiment of the fin treatments and open center.

The following prototype experimented with structural systems and we decided that not having a box on the outside benefitted the model. The reason this was possible was be- cause of the constant shape in the center providing a consistency to the model. The final model was eight times the volume of the prototypes and had the expanding in treatments from both sides. From one side to an- other the voids had parallel boundaries expanding to the fins having par- allel sides. Structurally the static sides within the fanning motion were closed off to hold light in the center, and only allow light in through the fins. In the end, the box was a product of everything I had learned and a progression from the original Picasso painting.
